
Garden of the Month for February
The Garden of the Month award for February goes to Edna Nixon at 119 Thirteenth Avenue, Indialantic.
Edna and Ron Nixon have lived in Indialantic for 20 years. Edna is a native Floridian, born in Key West and raised in Fort Lauderdale. Ron came from Michigan and loved native Florida plants. They have been adding to their tropical plant collection since moving here from Ft. Lauderdale.

Garden of the Month of January
The January Garden by the Sea award for the Yard of the Month goes to Trevor Nimmons, 210 Michigan Avenue, Indialantic. Trevor has owned the home for 16 years and has developed a native plant paradise. An interesting archway leads to the backyard past a fountain via pathways that permit viewing of the many varieties of native plants.

The October Yard of the Month award goes to the Melbourne Beach Market, 302 Ocean Avenue, Melbourne Beach, FL.

Migratory Bird Tracking
There is a new online mapping tool that allows you to view bird migration journeys around the world or right in your zip code.
'Migratory birds are these little globetrotters,' said Jill Deppe, the senior director of the migratory bird initiative at the National Audubon Society.
A new online atlas of bird migration, published on Thursday, draws from an unprecedented number of scientific and community data sources to illustrate the routes of about 450 bird species in the Americas, including the warblers.

The Danger of Light Pollution
There is convincing scientific evidence suggests that artificial light at night has negative and deadly effects on many creatures including amphibians, birds, mammals, insects and plants, sea turtles, nocturnal animals, insects and various human biological systems that are important to our health and our well-being. — Connie Walker

The September Garden of the Month goes to the home of Arlene Glywasky in The Cloisters at 350 Normandy Drive. Arlene is a gardener who fills her yard with beautiful flowers.

2023 Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl Poster Contest
This poster contest is sponsored every year by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service and the National Garden Clubs, Inc. Children from first through fifth grade are invited to participate in this annual drawing contest featuring conservation icons Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl! See last year's winner here.

The national grand prize winner of the Smokey Bear & Woodsy Owl Poster Contest will be honored with a recognition ceremony in Washington, DC. A round trip, 4-day, 3-night stay—including mileage and accommodations for four—will be provided. The recognition ceremony is typically held late in the summer. The National Garden Clubs, Inc., will award a $50 check to each of the first-place national winners. The instructions are attached.

Garden Club by-the-Sea is celebrating 58 years of gardening education, conservation and beautification in the neighborhood of Indialantic by-the-Sea. It’s about time for a makeover. We’re pleased to introduce our new website — www.gardenclubbythesea.com — and welcome the public to share our news and updates from our community partners that focus on the preservation and promotion of gardening, the lagoon, the environment, and offering scholarships to college students who pursue studies in horticulture and related fields.
